Highlights from the April 14, 2024 GreatCollections Coin Auction

1924-D Lincoln Cent, PCGS MS65RD

GreatCollections is offering a 1924-D Lincoln Cent graded PCGS MS65RD, and most 1920s business-strike Lincoln Cents from the Denver and San Francisco Mints are extremely scarce in uncirculated grades, particularly with Red surfaces. The 1924-D Lincoln Cent is no exception. Very seldom do examples graded PCGS MS65RD or higher appear in the marketplace, and the example offered in this auction is exceptionally nice. The coin also has the pedigree of Tom Bender, a well-known collector who has built many great PCGS Registry Sets over the years. Overall, it’s a very nice example of a key-date coin. Bidding on this coin should be fun to watch!

1851 3 Cent Silver, PCGS MS67

Another nice coin in the auction is an 1851 3 Cent Silver graded PCGS MS67. The coin has significant provenance, as it comes from the prominent collection of Bob R. Simpson, a collector who’s built some of the finest U.S. coin collections over the years. The coin in this auction is really attractive and has nice even, mellow toning on both the obverse and the reverse. The fields on both sides look practically immaculate, with very minimal detractions and pleasing eye appeal. PCGS has graded only 27 examples in MS67 grade, with just seven coins graded higher in MS67+ grade. This is definitely a nice coin that will complement any collection.

1882 Shield Nickel, PCGS PR67DCAM

The eye appeal of this 1882 Shield Nickel graded PCGS PR67DCAM is just screaming! The deep cameo, frosty surfaces on this coin are strong and prominent throughout the obverse and reverse sides of the coin. The coin just has a phenomenal appearance, and both the obverse and reverse have minimal flaws. PCGS has only graded four examples in PCGS PR67DCAM, with one lone coin grading higher in PCGS PR67+DCAM. It may be a very long time before another coin of this caliber hits the marketplace again.
