National Coin Week 2024 is being celebrated around the United States from April 21 through April 27. This national holiday has been celebrated since 1923 and celebrates the wonderful hobby of coin collecting. PCGS honors this beloved annual tradition by shining the light on a diverse array of individuals who love coin collecting and recount the very first coin that helped get them started on their numismatic journey.

Today, we have the pleasure of hearing from Drew Scott of the popular HGTV series Property Brothers. He fondly recalls some special 1700s coins he found as a child in Scotland that piqued his numismatic curiosities…

“When I was 10, I was on a beach in Scotland, skipping rocks. I found two rocks that were flat and round. When I looked closer, they were coins from the 1700s that had washed up on shore. It took a bit to make out what was on the coin. The idea that I could hold something so old in my hand was so awesome to me. I was hooked!” recalls Drew Scott. “I don’t search out coins or bills online, what I look for is a really cool story – either about where it’s from or the story of how I came across it. I have Roman coins that are 2,000 years old. They’re not super valuable since there are so many of them still available today, but I came across them in a small town antique shop in Italy. And that experience of finding them was cool to me.” He adds, “Knowing that we probably won’t use physical currency for much longer makes me want to continue to search out some of the most creative and unique pieces from around the world. There is so much beauty in coins.”
