The Battle of Gallabat started on March 9, 1889. The following day, Emperor of Ethiopia Yohannes IV was killed in warfare. Menelik II, hearing this tragic news, declared himself Emperor of Ethiopia on March 25, 1889. He gained the respect of the nobles in Ethiopia and was officially sworn in as emperor on November 3, 1889. Unfortunately when Menelik II took over as king, a plague known as “rinderpest” or “cattle disease” was in full effect killing his people. This great famine wiped out a majority of the cattle in the land and killed about four million people from 1888 to 1892.

Menelik II was a great military leader and able to unify tribes that grew his kingdom. He despised the slave trade, destroyed slave routes through this region, and punished slave traders with amputation. He approved the Ethio-Djibouti railway to be built in Ethiopia during the year of 1894 with the help of the French and defeated invading Italians in 1896. He spoke French, Italian, and English fluently and welcomed technological advancements with his territories. PCGS has listed a set titled 1972 Ethiopian Silver Proof Set, which includes the coin displayed above depicting Menelik II known as the "Conquering Lion."
