Obverse of 1859 Indian Head Cent
Reverse of 1859 Indian Head Cent

Ron Guth: The 1859 Indian Cent is a one-year type coin and the first date in one of the most popular of all United States coins. The obverse is identical to later years; the reverse features a plain wreath tied at the bottom with a ribbon, and encircling the words ONE CENT. This date is common in all circulated grades. Proofs are scarce but can be found with relative ease.
