National Coin Week 2024 is being celebrated around the United States from April 21 through April 27. This national holiday has been celebrated since 1923 and celebrates the wonderful hobby of coin collecting. PCGS honors this beloved annual tradition by shining the light on a diverse array of individuals who love coin collecting and recount the very first coin that helped get them started on their numismatic journey.

Today, we meet Jeff Howard, who recalls an Italian coin that inspired him to become an active and enthusiastic coin collector…

“The coin that first got me started collecting coins was a 1983 Italian 500 Lire that my parents brought home from their Italy trip one summer while my sister and I were at camp. I was captivated by the fact it was just so distinctly different from any other coin I had ever seen. It is bi-metallic, carries different design elements, and it even has Braille on it! It was an exciting light-bulb moment when I suddenly realized just how many different coins must be out in the world! So I asked for the rest of their foreign change from past trips and started sorting them out by country, type, and denomination and I didn't look back from there.”
