National Coin Week 2024 is being celebrated around the United States from April 21 through April 27. This national holiday has been celebrated since 1923 and celebrates the wonderful hobby of coin collecting. PCGS honors this beloved annual tradition by shining the light on a diverse array of individuals who love coin collecting and recount the very first coin that helped get them started on their numismatic journey.

Today, we hear from Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez, who reminisces about an old Lincoln Wheat Cent that kicked off his adventures in numismatics…

“I found a 1941 Lincoln Wheat Cent in a little handful of change my parents gave me for allowance money in October 1992, and it set me off on a numismatic journey I continue to this day. I was just 11 years old, and I remember thinking my grandmother wasn’t even 20 years old when that little coin was struck — and that the U.S. was just entering World War II. Something about that fascinated me, and I knew I had to start searching for more of these 'old pennies.' I’m still looking for them, and find it a thrill to this day to land one of these vintage Lincoln Cents from yesteryear from circulation!”
