PCGS Set Registry Update

A springbok is an animal that is indigenous to South Africa. The name of this antelope species was first believed to have been coined in 1775 and derived from “spring” (jumping) and “bok” (antelope) in the Afrikaans language. South African Airways, which began its commercial service in 1934, had a logo with a winged springbok looking like the mythical Pegasus.

The first appearance of the springbok on South African coinage started in 1947, with the reverse of the five shillings denomination during the reign of George VI. Several gold denominations also feature the animal; in 1967 it sprang up on the reverse of the iconic South African Krugerrand, a one-ounce gold bullion coin that is still minted. The springbok also makes its appearance on non-precious-metal coins, such as the colorful rand included in the South African Proof Set and listed on the PCGS Set Registry.
