PCGS Set Registry Update

The symbolic Irish harp dates back to the 12th century and was purportedly made of gold with silver strings. This instrument was depicted as part of the coat of arms for Ireland for centuries. Once Ireland became a free state in 1922, the Trinity College harp became the new symbol. This harp design was made between the 14th and 15th centuries. Who owned this harp? That has been debated by many and nobody is quite sure. However, the construction of the harp is of extraordinary quality as are the decorative carvings within the wood. This has led historians to believe that this harp was commissioned by someone that was affluent during the middle ages. Today, this historic harp can be seen at the Trinity College of Dublin in the Long Room. Another attribute of Irish culture is the horse known as the Irish Sport Horse. This horse was developed by cross-breeding an Irish Draught and a Thoroughbred in the early 1920’s for show competitions. They are excellent jumpers and with proper training, equestrian sports would be a natural fit for these horses. Coinage for the free state of Ireland was not struck until 1928 and the obverse of each denomination displays the Trinity College harp. The reverse of the ½ Crown coin displays the Irish Sport Horse. PCGS has recently listed a set titled 1954 Irish Year Set with other dates offered as well. Many of these year sets are easy to build and PCGS created them for our members to easily display their coins.
