P. Scott Rubin: Judd 9 is a 1792 Silver Disme with Reeded Edge. It is an extremely rare early U.S. Mint issue. Apparently, no more than four specimens survived into the twentieth century, with only three currently traced. Two of the three known specimens were recently offered as part of Heritage’s 2015 FUN Sale of the Donald G. Partrick Collection.

Heritage listed the two Partrick 1792 Silver Dismes as different varieties, struck from the same dies, because of difference in weight between the two. It is my opinion, that since these were Pattern issues and never meant to be used as currency, that the weight difference was not intentional but was probably just a function of the size of the planchet used for a test.

The heavier of the two above mentioned specimens was tooled after it was minted. The date under the bust of Liberty was removed and the area in front of her face shows deep marks in the planchet. The hair of Liberty was also retooled to add detail that was not included at the time of striking.

Unlike the 1792 Half Disme, which was struck in silver in large numbers, the 1792 Disme appears most frequently in copper (approximately twenty known) with only the aforementioned four specimens known in Silver. None of the 1792 Dismes were ever issued for circulation.
