The 1823 Private Restrike Large Cents are believed to have been struck on the request of Joseph J. Mickely who owned the dies to 1823 Large Cents. These private restrikes were probably struck sometime in the late 1800''s. At the time, the Mint was not too over protective of its unused dies that were no longer being used. It is believed Joseph Mickley may have purchased the dies from a scrap dealer who could have obtained them directly from the Mint. Very few examples are confirmed today and some suggest only about a handful of examples or two exist. Regardless, these Private Restrikes are very interesting and rare.
