Ron Guth:

Among the Bechtler coinage, Kagin 23 is one of the $5 varieties. In this case, the weight is 128 grains and the fineness of the gold is 22 carats, making it one of the later issues of Christopher Bechtler. The reverse is distinctive in that RUTHERFORD is abbreviated to RUTHERF: -- this same reverse was used on Kagin #s 18-23, then later on Kagin 26 (issued by August Bechtler). Kagin 23 is rated as a high R6 (13-30 known) which is consistent with the number of examples that have appeared at auction or are known by researchers.

The best numerically graded example is an NGC MS62. We know of three other Mint State examples, followed by roughly half a dozen AU's. Some Kagin 23's show lamination flaws ranging from minor defects to rather large flakes (look for the PCGS AU55 in the VIEW ALL COIN IMAGES for a dramatic example).
