Ron Guth:

Judd 83a is a genuine 1798 Large Cent overstruck twice with the obverse and reverse dies of an 1838 Half Dollar. It was not listed in the first through the seventh editions of Judd, but was added to later editions based, it seems, on poor photographs of the only known example. In July 2016, PCGS examined the actual coin and agreed with other researchers that it was not a product of the U.S. Mint. The shape of the design elements, the placement of the bottom curl relative to the date, and the orientation of the stars differs markedly from that of a genuine 1838 Half Dollar. In fact, the coin is plated in both editions of Keith R. Davignon’s “Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Half Dollars” (see page 93 of the 2nd edition). Decisions are still being made about how to handle the coin in future editions of the Judd reference, but it seems clear that it will be delisted from the main section of the book and perhaps moved to a different section.
