Ron Guth:
For some reason, the U.S. Mints paid particular attention to Quarter Eagles, producing the highest mintages since 1836. Employees at the Philadelphia Mint alone produced over 100,000 Quarter Eagles for circulation, along with a handful of Proof examples. Despite the high original mintage, the 1843 Quarter Eagle appears to be the rarest Quarter Eagle of the year, even more rare than the 1843-C and 1843-D Quarter Eagles. Mint State examples are very scarce, with exactly a dozen certified by PCGS, the finest of which is a single MS-64.
