Jaime Hernandez: In 1854 the Mint started experimenting by producing small pattern cents in order to replace the Large cent coins.

The 1855 J-167 Pattern Flying Eagle cent was one of the coin designs that the Mint struck as a possible replacement for the Large cent coins.

The 1855 J-167 had a very similar design to the 1854 flying eagle pattern cents (Coin # 11674) but with some slight modifications, such as having different style 5’s on the date.
