David Akers (1975/88): Proofs are rare and, despite the fact that the mintage of 50 is somewhat higher than for the other dates of this period, the 1864 in proof is basically the same rarity as the other dates of this decade. As was the case with the 1860 and 1861, it is possible that a substantial portion of the original 50 minted were subsequently melted.
