David Akers (1975/88): As the auction data indicates, the vast majority of known specimens of this scarce date grade VF or less. In fact, the average grade of VF-25 in our 226 auction catalogue survey is tied for fourth lowest average grade of any quarter eagle in the entire series. I can recall seeing only one fully mint state piece (and it was softly struck, as are all examples of this date and mint) and only three or four strictly graded AU's. Undoubtedly more exist, but, as is the case with all early S Mint gold coins, high grade examples are distinctly underrated.
