Ron Guth:

Judd 456 is a Copper-Nickel version of a regular 1866 Indian Head Cent, one that should have been made of Bronze. Because the last Copper-Nickel Cents were made in 1864, it's hard to figure out exactly what this coin is. It could be (as Saul Teichman suggests at uspatterns.com) that this is an off-metal error coin, similar to the 1943 Copper Cents, but the distance in time seems implausible. Or, because there are as many as half a dozen known, it could be an off-metal treat made deliberately for sale to collectors. Clearly, it was not a prototype for a design change or a reversion back to the alloy of old. Either way, Judd 456's are ingrained as part of the Pattern series and thus are highly sought-after by specialists in that series.
