Ron Guth:

Judd-1010 is a part of the Standard Silver series, a proposal to reduce the weight of silver coins in an attempt to boost their presence in circulation. The 1870 Standard Silver Dollar comes in two types: the design seen here with an Indian Princess, and another with a "white" Liberty in a similar pose, but with a shield behind instead of a globe in front. Judd-1010 features Longacre's name below the base to the right, an unusual occurrence on a pattern coin, made even more unusual considering Longacre died on January 1, 1869. Perhaps Longacre's successor, William Barber, added the name to the Judd-1010 to differentiate the obverse from his own design.

In a glaring oversight, this die pairing omits the name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ensuring that it would never be adopted as proposed.
