J-1206 is one of the so-called "Amazonian" pattern coins because of the warrior-like style in which Liberty is presented on the obverse. They are all very scarce to rare and they are among the most popular of all U.S. patterns. J-1206 is a copper version of the One Dollar Amazonian pattern, making it the largest and most impressive of their type. Perhaps as many as a dozen examples are known, but at least five of them are owned by the mega-collector, Bob Simpson. Red and Cameo examples are essentially unique.
Amazons were an ancient race of female warriors. They are usually shown as archers in ancient sculpture and art, but they can also be seen in gladiatorial combat.
