David Akers (1975/88): In my experience, the 1873 Closed 3 is three or four times as rare as the 1873 Open 3, and therefore, it would be my guess that the mintage of the 1873 Closed 3 was on the order of 50,000 pieces. Striclty uncirculated examples of the 1873 Closed 3 are very rare and are almost as infrequently seen as the proofs.

Gordon Wrubel: Quickfinder Notes: The loops on the Closed 3 terminate large balls that WILL NOT PASS through its CONSTRICTED opening. The Open 3 loops end with smaller balls that will EASILY PASS through the opening. The Closed 3 is about 40% scarcer that the Open 3 both in number of Mint State coins graded and total population. In the highest grades, however, the populations are about equal.
