David Akers (1975/88): Description: Obverse. Identical to J-1438. Reverse. Similar to J-1438 except that the denomination reads TEN DOLLARS, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is more curved and closer to STATES OF, and the scroll below the eagle is more compact.

Comments: As was the case with the similar half eagle, J-1438, at one time the two known specimens of this pattern were owned by Virgil Brand and William Woodin. One of these specimens, probably the Woodin piece, subsequently passed to F.C.C. Boyd, possibly after being owned by Waldo C. Newcomer of Baltimore. Dr. Judd purchased this specimen when Boyd's pattern holdings were dispersed in the early 1940's and then Dr. Wilkison obtained it in 1962 along with the other gold patterns from Judd's collection. In 1973, the piece was acquired from Dr. Wilkison by Paramount International coin Corporation.

The Brand specimen was offered in the Farouk sale in 1954 where it realized 150 Egyptian pounds or approximately $430.50. This is the only known auction record for this pattern. The present location of this second specimen is unknown to me.
