Judd 1526 is a silver pattern for an 1877-dated Half Dollar. The designs on both sides have been credited to William Barber, whose designs competed with those of George Morgan in this year. The obverse features a militaristic Miss Liberty in a crested helmet adorned with a defiant eagle. This obverse appears on Judd numbers 1526 through 1531, inclusive. The reverse features a squarish, Union shield bearing an eagle holding arrows and talons. This reverse appears on Judd numbers 1524 through 1527, inclusive (clearly, there was some muling of the different obverses and reverses).
Judd 1526 is known by only four examples, all of which have been certified by PCGS at one time or another. Currently, one of the coins (a PCGS PR62) is the only example in a non-Cameo holder. The three other examples are all Cameos. No Deep Cameo example has been verified. Of the four examples, the finest is the PCGS PR66+CAM currently in the Simpson Collection. See PCGS #861866 for additional Census information.
