David Akers (1975/88): Despite its low mintage, the 1879 is actually one of the most common date in the entire series in choice condition. This is due to the fact that it was hoarded to some extent, by John Beck among others. Uncirculated specimens of this date generally have a beautiful, rich, reddish-gold color, and although fully frosty specimens are occasionally seen, the typical 1879 is either partially proof-like or has full proof-like surfaces.
