Ron Guth:

Judd 1698 is known as the "Shield Earring" design because of the unusual, shield-shaped earring worn by Miss Liberty. Her flowing hair on the obverse and the defiant eagle on the reverse represent one of the most captivating and powerful design combinations on any U.S. coin. Roughly nine examples, more or less, are known of this intriguing rarity, the finest of which is a PCGS PR67DCAM. The price record of $126,500 belongs to the colorful NGC PR67 formerly of the Lemus Collection.
