David Akers (1975/88): This date has the highest proof mintage of any three dollar gold piece, and although the auction records do not indicate it, proofs of this date are definitely the most common of the series. Proofs have a depth of field and a prominent orange peel surface that business strikes simply cannot match. Proofs have a prominent (although not as pronounced as on the 1887) outline on the outer edge of the top left side of the wreath, whereas the outline is barely noticeable on business strikes.
