Ron Guth:
The 1898-O Quarter Dollar is semi-scarce and, in terms of rarity, it ranks 13th out of the 74 date/mintmark combinations in this series. It is fairly scarce in Mint State, but shows up relatively frequently at auction. The typical Mint State 1898-O Quarter falls into a grade range of MS2 to MS64, with Gems being very rare. There are two important outliers that are very special: one PCGS MS68+ (one of only four in the series) and a PCGS MS68. Both coins are visual stunners, with exceptional color and eye appeal.
This date exhibits a variety of strikes, ranging from weak to strong talons on the right side of the reverse. In our opinion, a fully struck example should command a premium, though they can be found with no premium attached.
