In 1987, Fred Zinkann produced "Half Eagles" of his own design in the hopes that they might be used for the 1987 Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution $5 gold commemoratives. According to Andrew Pollock, Zinkann produced examples in the following compositions and mintages: gold (6); "hafnium" (2); silver (100); and tungsten (88). The designs were never accepted, but Zinkann's "patterns" were listed in Pollock's book and have, therefore, become part of the pattern coin canon. However, they have not been picked up by Judd in any of the latest editions.
This version was struck in silver, then given an antiqued finish. The composition and purity (.999) were stamped on the edge.
